The frequency and status of licensing applications have become a pressing concern, particularly for iGaming operators who hold valid licenses.Ontario sports betting This topic is prominently featured during discussions at the Canadian Gaming Summit and the SiGMA Americas Summit taking place this week in Toronto. It is particularly significant since the government can only collect taxes from operators who are legally part of the market, which accounts for 20% of total revenues.
Looking ahead, what measures will be taken to address the illegal market? The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario has provided grey market operators a grace period of three to six months to register legally. The market needs to be regulated.
During his keynote address at the Canadian Gaming Summit, CEO Mungham emphasized the urgency, stating, \"You cannot delay this process for too long.\" He spoke alongside Martha Otton, the executive director of iGaming Ontario, and Dave Forestell, the chair of iGaming Ontario and moderator for the session.went live on April 4 .
Mungham remarked, \"We have indicated for some time that we will eventually classify this market as either regulated or unregulated.\" He urged existing operators to expedite their registration, stating, \"Let’s get your documentation submitted quickly.\" He referenced a transitional period of three to six months.
"We are already down to two months now,\" he noted. \"We are evaluating the tools available to us, whether legislative or otherwise, to delineate between the regulated and unregulated markets, distinguishing between legal and illegal operations.\"
Mungham mentioned a recent discussion with an applicant regarding their readiness to operate, where the applicant stated they would be prepared by January 23rd.
"That timeline is unacceptable,\" he commented. \"When they proposed November instead, that was also insufficient. We need operators to be ready by September, so tough conversations like this are ongoing.\"

Mungham warned that those in the queue or considering entering the market who fail to prepare by the given deadline may need to \"go dark\", resulting in customers seeking alternatives.

"Mungham's statement sends a very clear message,\" remarked Otton. \"It resonates with our stance that we are calling out operators who showed interest in the market but are not moving forward as promptly as we had hoped.\"
"We anticipated a greater number of operational licenses by June, and that hasn’t been the case. Therefore, we are actively following up with those operators to ensure we are not hindering their launch.\"
